Briefly describe your interest in community gardening?
I grew up helping my grandma garden. We harvested into an old tin pot and washed the vegetables at the well before bringing them into the house for dinner. It was commonplace in that area for neighbors to share their vegetables. A normal Saturday saw us walking up a dirt road or cutting through the woods carrying vegetables in a brown paper bag to some distant neighbor with their own offering ready for us to carry home. Community doubled our yield. Kids played and old folks caught up on the latest gossip. Sometimes folk remedies were discussed and sometimes given. Seed, starts, and supplies for canning changed hands. Grandma came from a magical time. Mom was a country girl too. We foraged poke, mushrooms, watercress and berries. These hill women held high the value of community at the most essential level and were really in touch with their environment.
What is you personal passion?
I am the proud father of Grant and Helen, age 14 and 4. Their interests range from ballet to composting. They keep me pretty busy.
